So I see lots of posts about remixes and bootlegs and edits so here's a helpful guide:

Easy guidelines:

Is it an official remix? It’s a remix.

Is it an unofficial remix? It’s a bootleg.

Did you just cut parts out? It’s an edit.

Did you take an acapella and an instrumental and layer them?

—>is it two different genres? Mashup.

—>is it the same genre? Blend.

What is a remix?

You take the acapella or parts of an existing song and create an entirely new composition from it. Using as much or as little as you see fit.

Can you release it?

If it’s official meaning sanctioned by the artist or label, then yes. Otherwise no. That’s when it becomes a bootleg. Same production process but the classification is based on legitimacy.

What isn’t a remix?

Cutting a track down to 1:30 is an edit, not a remix. You added nothing original to it.

But I quantized it and added new drums! Thats a redrum.
